Who Cannot Be a Pallbearer?
There is no single legal list of who cannot serve. The family and funeral director usually decide based on ability, age, and the order of service.
People who may be asked to step back
- Anyone not physically able to carry or steady the casket safely.
- Very young children, unless a symbolic role is planned with adults handling the weight.
- Someone the family prefers to seat with immediate mourners instead.
Ask early if you are unsure
If you want to help but cannot carry, offer to read, greet guests, or help with reception details.
